Yesterday, my 5yr old, Evelyn, started marketing “Movie Night” as early as 3pm. She worked diligently making movie tickets, handing out flyers to us and rearranging the front room.
She asked what time dad would be home. I told her 7pm. ”Great!” she said! She asked if we had popcorn. I answered yes! She asked if we had bottled water. I answered yes! She asked if we had candy. I answered no! She then says, “I know where you hide it! I’ll get it!” (I just chuckled!)
7pm creeped up and she screamed, “It’s time!” (I forgot, this weeks lesson in school was learning how to tell time.)
Unfortunately, dad was late! He got held up at work. She looked at me for a second and said, “No problem! I’ll just change the time on the ticket!” “No, you don’t get it! I don’t know what time he’ll be home, so I don’t think we can do movie night tonight!” I reluctantly replied. With frustration in her voice she said. “We have to do movie night tonight because that’s what I said we would do and I can’t go back!”
My child was on a roll. She couldn’t stop herself and I couldn’t stop her! She was determined and a woman of her word!
When dad finally arrived (1.5 hrs later) she greeted him at the door with his movie ticket. She didn’t even let him take off his suit and led him straight to the front room! She was persistent!
This is where it gets good!
She gave us our “FREE” movie tickets! She punched the tickets and stamped our hands for in and out service.
When the movie started, she dimmed the lights and asked us if we were OK. We all said Yes!
A few minutes later she handed us our “FREE” blankets to stay warm! She asked if that was better. “Yes, thank you!” we replied.
As the movie went on, she popped the popcorn and gave it to us for “FREE“! She asked if it was tasty and we said yes!
Then she asked if we were thirsty…again, we said Yes! ”I’ll be right back!” she said as she jumped off her chair.
But…
When she returned and handed us the bottled water, she asked for $2.00!
BRILLIANT!
Closing at its finest!
There wasn’t any room to decline her offer!
So, we bought the water and she handed us candy, too! It came with the water! Another bonus!
So let me recap her strategy:
- She Marketed ahead of time
- She offered Free Tickets
- She made us comfortable
- She delivered value by hosting movie night
- She ensured we were warm and entertained.
- And she fed us

THEN MONETIZED!
You need to take notes, because she did all this on her own!
She marketed her idea with plenty of time. She was prepared for the slightest curve ball. And she knew how it would end!
We knew her… liked her… and trusted her!
She had us saying YES all the way through the movie, and in the end she made $10.00!
That’s HUGE for a 5 yr old.
